I can only speak for the British, but the engagement ring is usually much more expensive than the wedding ring, and it nearly always involves a diamond or two. Back in 1993 when we got engaged a good friend of mine was a jeweler who specialised in diamonds. He made my wife's engagement ring for cost price only, and even then it cost me
More common than Europeans I think :-)
I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Pinnacle, why would you even ask? Do you worry that your boyfriend doesn't really care? :D
I don't know, no one has ever bought me one. :)
On the other hand, Keira Knightley might be blowing him nightly and he's unsure what would constitute an appropriate token of appreciation. Heck, could be Russel Brand rather than Keira. I guess if we screw with him long enough we'll get a reply.
Actually, my daughter brought up the subject. I cannot remember the context but she told me in Europe most women have simple gold bands. Nothing fancy. A couple things bothered me about this.
First, she has never been to Europe. In fact, given the opportunity to identify some countries on a map, I think England and Italy are the only ones she could say with certainty. Spain, France, and Germany would be a challenge and after that she would be at a complete loss.
Second, she is not taking into consideration that culturally, Europe is very diverse. Maybe diamond rings are not common in one country but that certainly does not mean this applies to all of them.
So, what have we learned? Diamonds must be common in the UK but thanks to emr we are clueless as to what goes on across the channel. Oh well, even if I told my daughter she was wrong, she would never believe me anyway.
Well, you could just direct her at this forum for answers :) Both of my kids would be laughing their asses off about now. Sounds like some asshole has made a rather lame attempt to hit on your kid, and it sounds like she had enough sense to question his honesty.
