I didn't read anywhere that said you only have until the 31st to upload data? I thought that was just the deadline for locking in the unlimited plan?

Maybe I misread... yes it seems like it is unlimited.
However the same "unlimited" limits apply due to bandwidth - and I'm willing to bet they have some throttling they can throw at you. Storage is cheap, drives are already below $35/TB
Not being a true IT guy and having to back stuff up at work, I cannot fathom having so much stuff to back up I need to pay for storage.

It's not necessarily about quantity. By backing up to the cloud, you can have a backup program run automatically overnight so you do not have to worry about it yourself. Yes, you could run a script to backup all your stuff to an extra drive but the cloud offers the added benefit of it being off site.

I think a cloud backup is a good fallback position for local backup, but I've got mixed feelings about it. Some of my clients using Macs have found that Carbonite (for example) seems to work only intermittently. Carbonite hasn't been able to resolve the issue to my satisfaction.
For my PC customers, Carbonite mostly works as advertised, however, there are a couple of caveats. Carbonite says that it offers real time backup, but newly modified files may not be backed up for as long as 3 hours. Restoring files from Carbonite is unacceptably slow. I had to use Carbonite to restore data files to a system which was totally toasted along with their backup drive, so Carbonite was a life saver. Unfortunately it took 36 hours to restore 30 MB of data. That's a pretty significant cost in downtime.
Given that external HDs are dirt cheap, I'd consider buying at least a couple, and treating them like tape cartridges for a local backup plan.
So whether you use a free cloud service or a paid one, I think you are likely to find that your bandwidth may be pretty severely restricted. Though I can't say I have experience with most of the services, I tend to be paranoid.
could also go this route using internals....just swap drives like tapes. You have to be a little more careful with the drives (less forgiveness than an external if you drop them) but it works really well
