    Syskey removal

    Morning all

Friend of mine was duped by a caller allegedly from TalkTalk into giving access to her PC (she was actually waiting for a call from TalkTalk with a broadband issue) and it looks like some kind of SysKey password on startup that I can't seem to get rid of.

Anyone have any experience of getting shot of this on XP SP2?

I've pulled all her data and next step is re-install XP over the top, would prefer to rescue if possible, however I think the removal of it causes mega problems after?

Yeah, I guess so huh. I think something like 1/3 of Windows users are still on XP actually. Not sure what the current numbers are, but something like that. Amazing.

I just b|tched at my boss a couple of weeks ago about my laptop is still on WinXP and he replied that they have no plans to upgrade. Imagine that! A large IT Support company that refuses to upgrade their own hardware that their people use to go out onsite. Talk about "Amazing."

Not familiar with this particular issue.

I cleaned one up where it the screen pops up that says you have been watching child pornography and if you pay a fine to the FBI they will unlock your computer...LOL. And...it turns on the webcam and tells you that your image is being uploaded to the FBI.

That was a disaster to clean up, but it was the guy doing the body work on my truck so he painted the truck box to clean it up. I definitely won on that.

Sounds like the FBI moneypack. I dealt with a lot of those a while back. I found the quickest way to clean it was to boot to another media (I carry Ubuntu on a usb stick) and browse to where it stores the executable (I believe under users\xxx\app data\local\) and just kill the file. Then you can boot to safe mode and clean up the remnants fairly easily.
