Dam, is the waiting line that long? Seems like an awful long time to wait. What is she going to do in the meantime?

I agree that seems a crazy long time before induction, but it doesn't seem to be unusual these days. I don't know why. In the meantime, she's working at a couple of restaurants/bars, though she's dropping one of the jobs soon. She is also going to take classes at Howard College in San Angelo when the next session starts.

One of her jobs is waiting tables at Fast Eddie's Billiards. She likes the job, and the people she works with, the money is good, but she hates the uniform. The Uniform seems to consist of a skirt that just barely covers her ass, and she really, really doesn't like it. But, so far no one has been rude or disrespectful to her, if you don't count heavy breathing and drooling.

The last time I spoke with her, the Uniform was discussed at some length, and I asked what she wore up top, and was told that any kind of top that was dark blue was acceptable. Made me feel a little happier. I did ask her how she would react if some drunk grabbed her ass, and she said she would speak to a manager and have the guy removed from the club. I thought that was a very mature response, because I really expected that she would have broken the guy's arm. I asked her about that, and she replied that response was off the table since she really wanted to keep the job.

Spoke some more with EC today about our ongoing hassle with Angelo State University, and I suggested that after she quits her other job, she might get a job working at a topless joint where she could show off her tats. She didn't seem to think that was too funny, but I told her "Look, in a few years you could have a resume that reads, "Waitress, pole dancer, Nuclear Engineer" " I thought it would be great!

One of the things I love about both of my kids is that they share my somewhat off center sense of humor. I think Elder Child remains focused on a IT career, but that could change during her enlistment. And really "pole dancer and Nuclear Engineer" is funny.

Looks like EC will report for induction in either December or January. joy. Chicago in winter. She is being "encouraged" to become a Nuclear Engineer, so she's pretty well decided on that career path. Sometime in the discussion, it was mentioned that the current reenlistment bonus for a Nuclear Engineer can run from $80 to $100 grand (don't know why there's a spread. Length of service, I guess) and that kinda got her attention. Made her $11 thou enlistment bonus look pretty small. Not that she complained.

Don't knock it with quotes. If they are pushing her to that, it is because she is smart. I scored really high on my ASVAB and they pushed nuke and chemical engineer/specialist on me. They pushed hard. I was getting recruited by other branches at MEPS when my score became known. My recruiter was getting worried I was going to bail on him. Nuke is not a job for your typical mouth breather that enlists. Be proud, sounds like you have a smart one.

I'm proud as Hell of her! The reason "encouraged" earned quotes is because the subtext is "This is what the Service expects from you, and you need to do it." So, she's embracing that career path. She's also prepared to make a lifetime commitment, so we will see what happens. I know I've said it before, but I can't help saying it again, she had the highest ASVAB score in the San Antonio District in the past year.

Not to throw water on your enthusiasm but they say those things all the time. When I took my tests way back when, they said the same thing: I made the highest score. When my son went in, they told him the same thing: highest score.

They told me that I qualified for whatever I wanted to do. They pushed the nuke program but I went for Advanced Avionics instead. My thinking was that if you go nuke, there aren't many civilian jobs that you can get on the outside. With avionics, you can go practically anywhere they have airplane maintenance facilities.

When I got out of the Navy, they were offering $16,000 as a reenlistment bonus for avionics. A lot of guys pounced on that. A good friend of mine blew it all on a car and that was the end of that. I turned that down and went to work for a major defense contractor instead and literally tripled my salary in the very first year.

Again, joining the Navy was probably the best thing I've ever done. And getting OUT of the Navy was probably the second best thing I've ever done.

I reported on October 22. After 6 weeks of basic, I went to Rantoul, IL arriving Dec 10th and leaving April 1st. That winter saw 3 blizzards, Ohio declared a state of emergency. Yeah, winter in the Windy City is awful.
