I've averaged 22.3 over 4500 miles, most of my driving is on freeways going 65mph and the onboard mpg calculator seems to be accurate to the tenth of a mile, the furthest off it's been has been half a mpg. I have yet to do a long road trip in it, but if I keep it at 65 mph I can get a touch over 27 mpg.

My previous car wasa a cadillac sts. I never got stuck in it, but there is hill with an S turn to get out of my apartment complex that never gets salted or plowed, and a long hill to get on the freewy that is always backed up in the morning. Every time I'd come to a stop I'd be panicked about whether I'd be able to get it moving again. When you regulary have meetings to get to at specific times, worrying about whether your car will get you there becomes old real fast. I also had a scare on the freeway driving home from Pittsburgh over Thanksgiving. Was going 60 mph, steady as she goes, was not accelerating, decelerating or swerving at all. Out of nowhere, the car fishtails almost 90 degrees and after it goin back and forth 5 or 6 times I finally got control of it again. If someone else told me that happened to them, I wouldn't believe it, but I swear I was not doing anything but going in a straight line. The SHO is a f**king tank in the snow!

Semper, I wouldn't care what you were driving or whether I thought you'd smoke me or not, any opportunity to put the hammer down is a good day in my book. I've never timed it, but supposedly it will get to 60 in just over 5 seconds. It feels somewhat violent when you mash the pedal down.

It was me that drove up to the anus of america to buy a 1983 Datsun 280 zx. That was the scariest day of my life. I kept that car til obama was elected, then bought a Mazda rx8. I kept the 280 for about two years after that but never drove it, then finally sold it about two years ago. My days of having more than one car are behind me now.

Bummer that you never drove the 280 much. I had an RX7, and loved it; bet the RX8 was really a blast. I can imagine Detroit being scary. Back when I worked in Austin, I had a kid offer to cut me with a cheap Mexican switchblade, and he was only discouraged when I pulled a pistol on him. Another time I had a bar owner over on Austin's East Side chase me for a couple of blocks waving a kitchen knife at me. But working on the east side of D.C. and some areas of Baltimore really but fear into an entirely new perspective. I wasn't ever threatened, but I was in places where I felt like about every second guy I saw on the street was sizing me up to decide if my potential payout was worth the risk of trying to take me down.

One time I was doing a delivery to a nursing home in Baltimore a few blocks west of the Camden Yards stadium, and a guy wandered out of a bar and fell face down in the street in front of my truck. Given my prior experiences in the area, I thought he was a shill, so I locked the doors on the truck and just sat there for about 15 minutes.

About that time, the "drunk" got up, gave me the finger, said "Fuck you white motherfucker" and walked off down the street with 4 of the guys who had been hanging around on the sidewalk watching trailing after him.

That was my second 280ZX, it was a failed attempt at capturing some nostalgia. My first one I had for a couple years and drove the crap out of it. It was a manual, the 2nd one that I got in Detroit was an auto, so it wasn't nearly as much fun to drive. Your stories sound a bit more scary than what I went thru up there, but I do very vividly remember that as I was broken down in a church parking lot in a not very nice part of town, a kid that was no more than 7 or 8 was walking down the street eyeing me up, and said "you best not leave that car there mister".

The RX8 was a fun car, it felt like it was on rails any time you went around a corner. It was also a lot roomier than you would think for packing it full of stuff when necessary. The suicide doors in the back made it easy to get some big stuff in the back. The mileage was shit tho, and it took premium gas to add salt to the wound, and tires were ridiculously expensive and only seemed to last 20K miles, but it was definitely a fun car and not too shabby looking either.

The Bridgestones on my RX7 wore out really quickly, but I replaced them with Dunlops that didn't deliver quite the performance, but wore like iron. I loved the RX7, but at about 75 thousand miles, everything broke. New A/C compressor cost me like $750, then the catalytic converter went south, but I got a local mechanic to replace it with an air injector that got me about 20 extra horse power for half the price of a new cat converter and it still met Federal standards. I've owned 4 Mazdas, and they were all great cars. When I moved to Virginia, I kept the RX7 and my wife's Ford Escort wagon, but after a year up there, it became apparent that the cost of getting the RX7 into compliance with Virginia's emissions law would be very high, so I leased the Maxima.

Ya, I've got nothing but good things to say about Mazda. I traded the RX8 in on a brand new mazda 3 with the skyactiv motor. It was rated at 28/40 mpg, but I got over 40 many times and hit 50 mpg twice on long road trips where my main focus was getting good mileage. I drove it for about 27K miles, averaged 35.9 mpg over those miles and then gave it to my girlfriend when I bought the cadillac.

The car I really wanted was a 2015 Mazda 6. It has a slightly larger higher horsepower motor than the 3, but it was 28/38 mpg if I remember right. Some day once they've been out for a few more years maybe I'll end up with a used one, but that would probably only happen if gas prices go back up to where they were the last few years.

That's interesting as I was sure it would be quite a bit lower than that. Obviously over here the cost of gas means cars that can get good MPG are a priority for most people, (my own does 50MPG + but is not something I enjoy driving). I don't usually like U.S. cars but I have to say if I lived over there or if the cost of fuel was half what it is here then I absolutely would be going out looking at one like yours. It's a stunner.

Currently, I can buy gas for $2.15.99 cents a gallon. Of course people still whine about the cost of fuel, but compared to the rest of the world gasoline here is ridiculously cheap. Still, the flip side is that you Brits can buy some very nice autos that aren't sold in the U.S. You really have a lot more choices in vehicles than we have here.

I'm just a hair short of 6 feet tall and pretty wide across the shoulders (and in my old age pretty wide in the waist as well) and I never was uncomfortable in any of the Mazdas I have owned. So that begs the question, just how big are you? I'm curious, but I don't think we will ever date or anything.

just shy of 6'4" but I have a very tall torso. Short legs. I have never had a car that I had an issue with leg room, it has always been head room.

I did go to a car show and sit in a Miata. the top of the windshield was about mid chest. Not sure who the hell drives those things.
