She was one of my wife's WIC moms. Very abusive first husband, one child with him, now on her second marriage with a pretty good guy, and a second child. Found a decent panel for $24 dollars on eBay, so I'll charge her for the panel and no labor, though my wife may decide I'm not charging for the part either. She's out of town for three days at a corporate staff meeting, so I may get the lappie done and returned before my honey is home. Might still catch some grief later though.

I learned this morning that Terry Goodkind actually has a Richard and Kahlan series. The first was "The Omen Machine" which was Sword of Truth #12 also. The 4th in the series I just loaded into our catalog this morning - "Warheart." (While researching this title is when I discovered it's part of a series.)

"The Third Kingdom" is second in the series, so I'm planning to read that one next. Third in the series is "Severed Souls."

Now I've got a reading list!

I haven't read much history about our current wars, and I guess I should. The last war where I was really emotionally involved was Vietnam. I had a lot of friends who served and either came home in a box, or were seriously screwed up. I didn't serve, but I was drafted and was about three days away from reporting for service when Nixon ended the draft, and reclassified all of us almost inductees as 1H.

There are some really great books about that period in our history, such as Archimedes Patti's Why Vietnam, and several less well known books written by guys who served in the war. I've got a nice little volume detailing how Charles Beckwith created Delta Force. Virtually all of this stuff has been out of print for decades, but if you want to read it, PM me with delivery info and I will send it. When you're done, I want it back for my kids to have.

I just downloaded another military SF novel, Call Sign Reaper, but with this description, I couldn't resist. "**Warning** This book contains adult situations, violence to aliens and humans alike and foul language."

Don't bother. Crappy military porn. Characters are poor, the tech amounts to "magic" and the battle scenes mostly suck. And it's also a borderline Harem story. The protagonist is irresistible to women, even the one whose finger he cut off during an interrogation. Spare yourself.

After reading a string of mediocre to poor fantasy novels, I've hit on some decent police procedurals and legal thrillers. I've just started Damien Boyd's DI Nick Dixon series. I'm about 75% through As the Crow Flies, the first book in the series, and it's very good so far. Very understated and generally low key by the standards of American crime fiction, but the characters are good and the investigation is realistic.

I've also read three of Paul Levine's novels. The first was Bum Rap featuring an attorney named Jake Lassiter, a former pro football player sidelined by injury. Lassiter is defending fellow attorney and semi-sleazeball Steve Solomon from what appears to be an open and shut murder charge, while trying to avoid a romantic entanglement with Solomon's law partner and lover Victoria Lord.

Levine has also written several books featuring Solomon and Lord as the central characters. I've recently read Solomon vs. Lord, and Deep Blue Alibi. All excellent legal thrillers, and funny as Hell. If you like G.M. Ford these books are right up your alley.
