I understand now. When he said prop, I thought of the thing on a boat motor but that is not what he meant.
I doubt if these were originally intended to be a decoration. They are too unique to have a mass market as a decoration, they look really heavy, and I am confident they are really old but not new with the intent of looking old.
I thought the connecting rod would have been a really good idea but I cannot think of an application where a connecting rod would be wood if it was used in an engine or pump. I still think my idea for a steam paddle boat has merit but would be hard to prove correct. We have a steam paddle boat nearby that goes up and down the Grand River out to Lake Michigan. Maybe sometime I will stop by and try to get a close-up look at their boat.
Also a good theory but unless you can press a sleeve into that, there is no bearing or smooth surface for the moving parts and it would tear itself apart.

I was at a museum where they used to build paddle boats and one of the old timers said it looks like it is off a paddle boat but they defiantly were not made of wood.

Must be getting old; I thought we had pretty much concluded that this was just a decorative replica of a connecting rod.
