Cool Got AT&T's "1GB Internet" Today

Previously, I was on their Uverse internet which was fine for my purposes. My speedtest.net results before the upgrade: 57MB Download and 5.8MB Upload.

After upgrade via hardware CAT5 cable to my desktop: 258MB Download and 165MB Upload.

My Samsung Galaxy S4 on wifi: 165MB Download and 173MB Upload. Upload is actually a tad bit faster.

I still don't know how they get the name, "1GB" but it is indeed super fast.

The cost is roughly the same, about $70/month for a two year commitment.

Just curious is any of you guys have tried this out yet. I'm guessing it would be great for gaming online.

I have not tried it. As you said, it is probably a good choice for online gamers. As long as I can stream video, I'm okay. ATT describes my package as 18 Mbps down. I just measured it and it is 17.73 Mbps down. Maybe I should call them and ask for a partial refund.

Once you go past 25-50M you don't see any real-life difference, unless you're downloading a big file from a CDN.
I went from 23/2 with the former uverse to 75/unspecified (measured 90/6) with Comcast and I can't say I saw any difference except for some torrents. They just gave a speed boost to 100 (measured 115/6).
I could get a free upgrade to 200 for 1 year but I don't feel paying more after that.

Agreed. I had Comcast's blast package before I moved, it would consistently test around 125-150 for me. When I moved I went with a 25MB package, and other than torrents I never notice a difference (I typically have several devices streaming Netflix, etc. consistently).

My office account has 50 Mbps and I find that perfectly adequate. My home account is 150 Mbps, but that's mostly because our bandwidth is metered. Normally, that's not an issue, but when Elder Child is home for the Holidays, our bandwidth usage goes through the roof. With YC out of school and my wife having some time off, we really pound Netflix.

I got junk ATT dsl at the house. 1.3 Mbps down and .3 up.

All we do is surf the net but it still sucks.

So you guys are saying it's no big deal, huh?

Well, I can now watch porn on multiple devices using multiple monitors all at the same time without any buffering or lag.

So put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Heck, the quality of porn these days is pretty poor, and if you aren't on "For Pay" sites it's almost impossible to find a site that isn't loaded with malware. I won't say that "once you've seen a thousand blowjobs, you've seen them all" but it's pretty close to true.
