Walabot - cool DIY tool for seeing inside walls

This was brought to my attention on another site. Their site had it on sale for $149 not long ago but it is back to $199 again. My stud finder gives so so results. It is probably ten years old so I could probably find a better one. If Walabot gets this down to $100 at some point, I could see myself getting this instead of a new stud finder.

That thing looks kind of cool. Being a gadget guy, I can see getting something like that....and probably using it once like most my other specialty tools. lol.

A buddy of mine bought this little camera that hooks to your phone - something like this (but I don't think this is the exact one he got):

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NCSXRGL?psc=1

It's pretty cool, now granted you need to drill a hole in a wall to use it, but it's cool for seeing what's behind a wall, in your car engine, etc.....

Between a regular $20 stud finder with display and a magnet I've never had any issue whatsoever. When the stud finder is inconclusive, the magnet never fails.
Plus if you read the Amazon reviews it's not that great.

Yeah, I don't do any home repairs or remodeling that require a stud finder. I don't pull cable professionally anymore so I wouldn't buy one. This weekend I replaced the old ceiling light fixture in the kitchen that used a halogen bulb with a fixture that uses 3 LEDs. I Installed the old lighting fixture about 20 years ago. Anyway, looking at that old wiring again scared the piss out of me. I just clipped the wires off the old fixture and wired the new fixture into the leads from the old hardware. Also replaced the old light switch with an LED friendly dimmer switch. The old halogen provided about 800 lumens, the new hardware gives us 2460 lumens for far lower heat and lower energy consumption. Damn! Did I go off topic again? sorry

When looking at the manufacturer's web site, it becomes clear this is a very new product. Did they bring it to market too soon? Maybe. Does it need patience in order to work properly? Probably. Is it still incredibly cool? Absolutely! This product is a glimpse of things to come. When I bought my Commodore VIC-20 people questioned if there was any use for computers yet look how far we have come. The Walabot may not meet our expectations today but I believe it will evolve into a tool that is commonly found in contractors and DIVers toolboxes and it will be copied by competitors.

I had a garage of tools I used once...it is almost comical. I have given way or sold most of them but things I think I needed? I bought an engraver to engrave my name on shit I dont use...that is about the only thing that gets used

At this point being cool is pretty much what it can do. Looking at review videos, as a studfinder it plain sucks - any regular $20 one is far more precise. Being able to see where a pipe is may be fun, but usually useless. And wires can be detected with a studfinder although they run at 3ft above floor horizontal and along a stud vertical in 99% of cases.
As it is I would pay $50 for it, if only for the cool factor and maybe developing an app if somehow I have nothing better to do.
