    It looks like an auger but I am not sure what it augs. There is nothing to show scale. Is it for auging sap holes in maples?

    Good point. The handle is 10 inches wide and it is 13 inches tall.

    No, it is not used for drilling a hole in a maple.

    It's a wood drill bit followed by a conical reamer.
    It would make a slightly tapered hole.
    Width set manually so not extreme precision, the hole would be plugged by a conical piece and depth is not critical, but seal is.
    Cork hole for a wine barrel?
