I guess I'll make more of an effort to actually read it this time around. Maybe I can even get to book 2 before the next movie comes out.

    Unlikely, but you never know...
Did I goof here? I tend to avoid books with a movie tie-in, because I tend to regard them as books written from a screen play or books written to to be a screen play.
Yes, Mr. Death... I'll play you a game! But not CHESS !!! BAH... FOOEY! My game is...

The Mortal Instruments series is pretty much out. And what I mean by that is there are at least 5 books out so far, but I'm not up on how many are in the series. This is my daughter's thing and I started reading City of Bones after seeing the movie. I just heard that movie #2 will be released in the next month or so.

So loading records this morning I saw Terry Goodkind has a new book out soon. How soon I don't know, but I am number 2 in the queue whenever it finally gets here. It's called Death's Mistress. Here's what Amazon has to say:
Onetime lieutenant of the evil Emperor Jagang, known as "Death's Mistress" and the "Slave Queen", the deadly Nicci captured Richard Rahl in order to convince him that the Imperial Order stood for the greater good. But it was Richard who converted Nicci instead, and for years thereafter she served Richard and Kahlan as one of their closest friends--and one of their most lethal defenders.

Now, with the reign of Richard and Kahlan finally stablized, Nicci has set out on her own for new adventures. Her first job being to keep the unworldly prophet Nathan out of trouble...

This will launch an entirely new series and cast of characters centered on one of best-loved characters in the now-concluded Sword of Truth.

I've read a lot of pretty forgettable stuff recently, but one thriller I liked a lot was Cold by John Sweeney. You can see more about the book on goodreads.com here:
    https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/...om_search=true

The first thing you notice is that there are a fair number of 3 star reviews as well as unusually high numbers of 1 star and 4 and 5 star reviews. Most of the 1 star reviews object to Sweeney's depiction of Mormons. A number of readers also disliked the fact that early in the book, there are what seem to be completely unrelated plot lines, which is certainly a valid criticism. What surprised me was how many reviewers finished the book and still couldn't understand how the multiple threads related.

I would almost suggest that anyone reading the book might actually want to start with the afterword. The novel is very dark, and contains horrific descriptions of torture, but in the end I thought it was an exceptional book.

Thanks for the warning. I'm not really into reading about torture and dark plot lines. It was all I could do to get through The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and the dark scenes were not the main plot.

Sweeney keeps saying that Cold isn't a novel about Russia under Putin, wink wink nudge nudge.
