And I liked the movie as well

Books usually are.

I like Nicolas Sparks and some of his recent movies have disappointed me. His latest movie "The Choice" was a really good read. The movie was just OK. However, I truly loved The Lucky One as a book and as a movie, even though the movie rearranged the sequence of the novel, somewhat. Some things you learn in the beginning of the book that seem key to the plot are left out entirely.

When the movie first came out, I decided not to see it because I thought it was unlikely Matt Damon could carry a movie by himself on what I expected to be a single set. People kept saying how great it was and I later discovered there is more to it than Matt Damon and a single set, so I went to it towards the end of the run at the bargain second run theater. I am glad I saw it. I will even see it again sometime if I get the chance.

Love this book

Yes, certainly one of my favorite novels. I was a huge fan of Stephenson's work through, say, Cryptonomicon, but since then I haven't liked his work as much.

Speaking of favorite authors, how about Tim Powers? Powers has written what I would say are arguably the best fantasy novels ever to blend classic myth and legend with contemporary settings. Powers writing is dense, with multiple layers of meaning but is never dull and pretentious. It might be fair to say that Powers, along with Charles de Lint are the founders of Urban Fantasy. Unfortunately, that has the connotation that they were writing "sorceress meets shape shifter, screws shifter, saves world from Forces of Evil" schlock that's so common now.

I think Last Call and Declare are his best works.

I've just started reading crime fiction by the Polish Author Zygmunt Milozewski. I just read Rage which is of course the last novel in the series about prosecutor Teodor Szacki but I am starting from the beginning of the series now. Szacki has a dry, satirical, sarcastic sense of humor and he is a great character. He is a man intensely driven by his job, who also has some serious character flaws. In particular, he can be so blinded by the big picture that he overlooks small, personal crimes like an abused wife.

Anyway, the writing is superb, the characters are excellent, and for those of us who read a lot of crime fiction, the story isn't set in the U.S. or Britain. The Polish legal system seems very different from what most of us are used to, and the background is new and refreshing. Good stuff.

I have been reading the Well of Souls series by Jack L. Chalker. Excellent storyteller, and DEEP!

I am currently in the second book, Exiles At The Well Of Souls. These books are not new, and I have been scouring second hand book stores to find them. (Awesome places to be, BTW) So far, I have found the first two and the fifth out of five. Need to find books three and four sometime soon.
