"But I got it because I'm an iSheep who needs to have all my stuff have an Apple logo on it."
Yes, Mr. Death... I'll play you a game! But not CHESS !!! BAH... FOOEY! My game is...
WIFFLEBALL!
The only phone with truly open software is the Nexus. Everything else is filled with carrier bloatware and locked down. Apple, Microsoft, Google. They are all walled gardens now.
But yeah, there's definitely pros and cons to both sides it. For my primary systems though I'm fine with walled garden. I don't want to mess around with taking things apart and hacking things to make things work. Tired of spending time fixing things and finding workarounds. I want reliability. I want things to work as designed. On the other hand, for hobby type stuff, I love open systems. I've spent many a weekend learning Linux and a million other things over the years. These days though, for me personally I'm more interested in spending my time creating content rather than spending time dealing with the hardware/software the content is created with. So I'm fine with walled garden for that reason alone.
Make up your mind, Nexus is *THE* Google phone...
And there are other open phones out there - Oneplus One runs Cyanogenmod out of the box and can be rooted without voiding the warranty.
That's what I meant. The Nexus runs pure Android. It's the ONLY one that does as far I know. Most Android based phones are filled with carrier bloatware and crudded up with crap. So you have to root it to be able to remove all that extra stuff. It's just too much hassle. If other people want to root then cool. It's just not for me. Not to mention, once you buy one of those good luck getting OS upgrades as they come out. Carriers take their sweet time releasing (if they ever even do).
As for Oneplus One well great. Up until recently you could only get one through an invitation. And demand for it is on the decline now. The Oneplus One had it's 5 minutes of fame. I guess overall it's a pretty good deal since they only cost around $300. But either way, meh.
That's debatable, I'd say Cyanogenmod is what you could call "pure Android" - it doesn't even include the Google apps.
Nexus is not rooted and rooting will void the warranty.
Rooting most phones is a one-click process. Literally. And for updates there is always Cyanogenmod. My old GS2 is running 4.3
My boss has it and he's pretty happy with it. I was considering it until I saw the pictures that GS6 is taking...
