I was offered a job in Amarillo managing the local branch of a vending company, and it was actually very good money. Of course, it was expected that I might have to sometimes fill in for an absent driver and have to service vending machines, pool tables etc. Well, I had spent a lot of my time in management with my previous employer filling in for missing drivers and tossing 100 pound bags of wet linen 3 feet over my head on top of a truck, dealing with hospital linen which included lots of human waste, having maggots crawl up my arms and such like, so I thought I could handle delivering coffee supplies.
Anyway, the deal breaker was that the company really wanted me to move to Amarillo, but I already owned a home 50 miles away which was paid for, and I wasn't sure I wanted to commit to a lease, let alone a purchase, to get the job. Why did I have to move to Amarillo? Well, some of their best clients were bars, and my prospective employer made it clear that I would be expected to do some good will visits and drink with managers and owners. In Amarillo, I could get a taxi home if I got too wasted. But, they didn't want to be liable for my spending an hour on the road. Shoulda gone for it, but I overthought it and was too cautious. Still, it is the only time a prospective employer told me that drinking on the job was mandatory.
