Despite the fact that a lot of people claim to believe in the literal truth of everything in the Bible; nobody really does. People tend to interpret the Bible, or the Torah, or the Koran, or whatever, based on their preconceptions and established views. Frequently, religious beliefs may be more about a sense of communal identity. The upshot is that virtually anyone, of any faith, can find a way to interpret their holy books to support their interpretations. Pro slavery Christians and anti-slavery Christians both found scriptures to support their beliefs. Sometimes the same verses.
